What’s that over there… ?

Hills, mountains, forests, valleys, glens, lakes, lochs and islands. Towns, villages, schools and ports. Things we see when we are out and about in the country. Often in the distance. Often only partially recognised.

How it works

ViewScanner uses Ordnance Survey data from England, Scotland and Wales and will work anywhere in those countries. However, it will not work in Northern Ireland or countries outside of the UK. Data for other regions will be released shortly.

Simply point, click and scan. No internet connection is needed. The app draws a profile of what’s around you. Drag the profile to match the horizon or other geographical features nearby. The app initially highlights any hills, mountains, lakes, lochs, islands, towns and villages within view. Drag the cross hairs over a point to get details. Select the icons to show any other hidden points such as forests and valleys, or search for a particular place of interest. You can filter by place type, or get a map view of a selected point (if there is internet available). You can save and retrieve the scans to re-look at later.
